Summer has already been buzzing! At Marr Cook Elementary, we hope our students have a wonderful and safe summer while they take time to relax and rejuvenate. But we also encourage them to continue to read.

Every student at Marr Cook Elementary has been challenged to complete a summer reading challenge in which they will need to read at least 30 books throughout the summer. Incoming kindergarten students were also given a reading challenge at their recent screening. They’re asked to listen to at least 30 stories. A reading routine will help all to succeed. The students receive a reading brochure where they can keep track of how many stories they’ve read and when school starts in August, they will return their paper, indicating that they have met their goal. Our summer reading bash will take place on August 30th. Kona Ice will be serving a cool treat where students can flavor their very own snow cones. They will also be recognized with a certificate and a few other small prizes.

In order to prepare our students for the summer reading challenge, every preschool-2nd grade student was able to pick out one free book to jumpstart their summer reading. A total of 631 books were given out to our students. We also partnered with our local library, the Goshen Branch of Clermont County Public Libraries. They came to each classroom and introduced their very own summer reading program. Students can read one book, but earn double the “points.” They can log their reading for the library as well as for our school.

Not only do we encourage all of our students to read throughout the summer, but the Goshen staff has also been motivated to read throughout the summer with our “Booked for the Summer” reading challenge. Teachers are asked to take pictures of themselves reading throughout the summer and before school resumes, they take a picture with their book stack for everyone to see. Some of our teachers have even taken some time to stop and read while traveling in Croatia and Italy.

At Goshen Local Schools, reading rocks and it never stops!
