The much-anticipated Pierce Township off-leash Dog Park is completed and ready for our four-legged furry friends to enjoy. The official leash cutting ceremony will be held on July 4, 2021 following the annual Fourth of July Children’s Parade & Celebration at the Pierce Township Park on Locust Corner Road.

“We are beyond excited to officially open the Pierce Township Dog Park,” said Lori Wilson, who led the project.

The Dog Park started with a spark of an idea in 2016 and fundraising began the next year. “The Township’s Park’s committee is proud of the fact that the Dog Park was funded entirely by public donations through community events, such as Parkfest, dog washes and a direct mail campaign,” said Wilson. “The Dog Park project received a huge amount of support from the business community, as well. Words cannot express how grateful we are for the community’s support – without it, the Dog Park would not have been a reality.”

The Pierce Township Dog Park is open to residents, as well as non-residents. It features two separate enclosed areas: one for large dogs and one for small dogs to enable dogs of similar size to play safely, a water fountain for two-legged and four-legged thirsty visitors, plenty of shade trees for those hot summer days. And soon, benches will be installed for anyone needing to rest their weary bones.

Tell your dogs to grab their leash and let the play begin! See you at the dog park! For further information, contact:

Pierce Township Opens History Trail in Pierce Township Park

Building on the 2020 addition of a new Learning Center with stage and restrooms, and 1800 feet of new paved walking paths in Pierce Township Park (961 Locust Corner Rd.), the Township has launched a History Trail highlighting significant moments in the Township’s history. The new History Trail, along with the new dog park, will be dedicated on July 4th at the Township’s annual Fourth of July Bike Parade and celebration.

The Township has installed History Markers along the paved walking trails in the park. Initially, there are five markers illustrating key events in the Township’s history:

• The founding and early history of Pierce Township.

• Early settlements in Pierce Township.

• The 1937 Flood.

• The 1865 Bradbury Road Train Wreck.

• The History of the Village of Amelia.

The artwork for the history markers was created by Township resident Lori Wilson. Each marker has historic photographs, maps and a summary of the event. A QR code on each sign will allow viewers to access more complete information and data sources on the History page of the Township’s website.

The History Trail was part of the Park and Nature Area Master Plan that was adopted by the Township Trustees in 2016. George Carpenter, who led the development of the History Trail material, with the help of many Township residents, commented on the origin of the History Trail. “When the idea of a Pierce history trail first surfaced, we found that the only collection of Township history was contained in a few boxes in the Township’s storeroom. However, it did not take long for us to find significant and interesting stories like the 1865 Bradbury Road Train Wreck. Most people today have no idea that there was once rail service to the township, including a wooden trestle over Bradbury Road.” More markers are planned for the future. The Township hopes long time residents will come forward with both ideas and historic photographs and materials.
