WILLIAMSBURG — In his first season playing varsity in Williamsburg, quarterback Carson Tenhunfeld feels right at home.
The transfer senior who previously played football at Anderson and basketball for West Clermont took advantage of what the New Richmond defense gave him and beat the Lions with both his legs and his arms to lead the Wildcats to a 28-12 victory Aug. 29 in the team’s home opener on Osborne Field at Abrams Stadium.
“I kept it shallow in the box and let our o-line go up and eat everything inside,” Tenhunfeld said. “The o-line played great tonight and allowed me to make those great plays and get us in scoring positions.
“We knew they were going to come out with 4-over-3 or 2-over-1, so we knew they were going to empty the box, and it allowed me to get up in there and run behind my running back, Gray Robinson. It was perfect.”
The early turning point was a couple of fourth-down conversions in a scoreless tie in the second quarter.
On Williamsburg’s fourth offensive drive starting at the 8:33 mark, Tenhunfeld connected with tailback Landon Hittle for a 9-yard gain to move the chains. Following a lengthy timeout, Hittle scampered 34 yards for the first score of the game. The failed two-point try gave the Wildcats the 6-0 lead with 6:19 to go in the first half.
Following a turnover on downs by New Richmond, the Wildcats took over with 4:37 remaining in the quarter.
Tenhunfeld hit Hittle for 9 yards on third and 8. After Troy Harris was flagged for a facemask, Tenhunfeld ran for 6 yards to set up a fourth and 2, and the senior converted on a 14-yard run to move the ball to New Richmond’s 31. Tenhunfeld and Hittle hooked up again, this time for a 20-yard connection to get inside the red zone, and Tenhunfeld found Grady Barber for 10 yards down to the 1.
“It’s all up front, they give me a bunch of time,” Tenhunfeld said. “Trey Holden and Caleb Neth, our two guards, give me a bunch of time, and it allows me to figure out the plays and let me do my thing.”
Hittle scored his second TD on the next play for a 14-0 lead after the successful two-point conversion.
“Hittle is going to do everything that you ask him, too. He is going to be a workhorse, and he’s not even gotten his dues that are owed to him,” Williamsburg coach Nick Ayers said.
