Girls flag football drawing interest

COLUMBUS — Flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, especially in Southwest Ohio. This weekend, the sport will reach the national stage in the Buckeye State.

Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, along with the Hall of Fame Village complex, will host the NFL Flag Championships for the second consecutive year July 17. Staff members from the Ohio High School Athletic Association will join representatives from the NFL, the Cleveland Browns, the Cincinnati Bengals and the Pro Football Hall of Fame for the festivities, according to a press release from the OHSAA.

“We have seen the growth of girls flag football in Ohio and across the country over the last several years and are excited that so many young ladies have taken up this sport,” said Doug Ute, OHSAA executive director.

While there are no high school-affiliated flag football squads in Clermont County, the sport has taken off at the youth level, including Under the Lights, a league that plays at Miami Meadows Park in Milford. The co-ed league includes kids from kindergarten to 11th grade playing in a seven-plus game season, including playoffs. There also is a youth team out of Milford that competes in Flag Football Fanatics, a nonprofit youth organization. More information can be found at playfanatics.com and shorturl.at/U3LgD.
