On Sept. 13, members of the Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA) Chapter #121 (Greater Cincinnati) presented the National POW/MIA Recognition Day September 20, 2024 Poster to Clermont County Commissioners.
This National Recognition Day commemorates the sacrifices and service of those who were prisoners of war (POW), as well as those who are still listed as missing in action (MIA), and their families.
There are 1,741 American personnel listed by the Defense Department’s POW/MIA Office as missing and unaccounted for from the Vietnam War. There are over 7,400 American service members still missing from the Korean War.
The United States Congress passed a resolution authorizing National POW/MIA Recognition Day in 1979. The United States President proclaims National POW/MIA Recognition Day on the third Friday of the month of September each year.
National POW/MIA Recognition Day posters are displayed at public buildings to promote the day. Remembrance ceremonies and other events to observe the day are also held in places such as the Pentagon, War Memorials, and Museums.
National POW/MIA Recognition Day is not a federal public holiday in the United States but it is a national observance.
