The Bethel-Tate Fire Department has been notified that Duke Energy Natural Gas Maintenance is coming soon from mid-April to May. Crews will be working in the township to inspect the natural gas pipeline facilities to better serve their customers. This is routine maintenance that is normal and safe.

Property owners and residents of the properties that will be inspected should be notified that the inspection will involve surveyors who will be staking or otherwise marking the pipeline easement for instruments known as Above Ground Markers (AGMs). During the inspection process, these instruments will detect the inspection tool as it passes through the pipeline.

During the work, it may be necessary for Duke Energy to “flare” or burn off any excess natural gas. You may notice:

  • a tall flame, visible for a half-mile or more.
  • a loud noise.
  • the smell of natural gas.
  • technicians in your area.

These activities are safe, routine, and controlled and are used routinely in the gas industry. They will be managed by trained Duke Energy personnel in cooperation with the BTFD. Please do not be alarmed as this is a normal part of their operation and federal compliance requirements.

Duke Energy thanks you for your patience and understanding as they work to maintain a safe and reliable natural gas system.
