Registration is now open for the New Richmond Branch Library book discussion with Dr. Christopher Phillips, UC history professor and author of “The Rivers Ran Backward, The Civil War and the Remaking of the American Middle Border” on May 1 at 11 a.m.

In the book, Phillips chronicles the little-known July 1876 lynching of George Mangrum, Confederate sympathizer and alleged rapist and murderer in New Richmond – 11 years after the official end of the Civil War and the last year of Reconstruction under President Ulysses S. Grant.

The story is told within the backdrop of shifting cultural, political and racial norms before , during and after the Civil War that violently divided and still divide our country.

Illuminating discussion about a time in history steeped more in mythology than fact is anticipated. Hope to see you there!
