Libby’s Country Candles is set to light up your life with handcrafted candles that come in a variety of scents and styles.
Owensville residents Cory Cooper and his wife Libby Cooper own Libby’s Country Candles.
They started their business in 2017, selling at fairs and festivals. Throughout the years, they evolved their business to include selling wholesale to other boutiques and stores, such as Jungle Jim’s International Market.
Recently, they were presented with an opportunity to move into their own shop inside Eastgate Mall; they opened Libby’s County Candles, located next to the mall’s food court, on June 10.
All of the candles sold at Libby’s Country Candles are handcrafted using locally sourced materials; Cory Cooper explained that all their supplies are in Ohio.
“It helps to keep our prices low, and we try to keep the prices as low as we can for people,” Cory Cooper added.
The couple makes all their candles at their in-store studio or at their home studio.
Libby’s Country Candles got its start because Libby Cooper loves candles.
“We were spending a lot of money on candles, so we thought we should try making them,” Cory Cooper explained.
The experiment was a success. At first, the couple made candles for themselves, family, and friends, and then they started expanding, and the rest is history.
“The best part about owning our own store is making our own candles,” Cory Cooper said.
The two enjoy experimenting with scents and styles.
Among the many candles sold at Libby’s Country Candles are the cereal bowl candles, which are made to replicate the look and smell of your favorite breakfast cereal.
The “milk” and “cereal” are all made by hand, including the “cereal” itself, which is made using a specialized mold.
“We like to have sort of a challenge,” Cory Cooper said, explaining that they worked hard to achieve the exact fragrances of the four different cereals, reminiscent of childhood, including “rainbow rings.”
Libby’s Country Candles will also refill your used candle vessel, at a reduced price.
For example, their cereal bowl candle retails for $19.99. When customers bring back the empty bowl, they can have it refilled for $9.99.
Libby’s Country Candles will also refill safe and useable vessels purchased at other retailers.
“We will refill other containers, as long as it’s safe,” Cory Cooper reiterated. “We think it’s better to reuse things instead of throwing heaps of glass away.”
When it comes to the burn time of the candles, Libby’s Country Candles’ 12 oz. jar candle burns about 30-40 hours, and the cereal bowl candle burns about 65-75 hours, said Cory Cooper.
Shoppers visit the store for a number of reasons.
“Lots of people come in for lots of different reasons,” Cory Cooper said. “Some want a signature scent, and some want something quirky for a gift.”
He explained that the store sells a dough bowl candle that many people use for their table’s centerpiece; the cereal bowl is a statement piece, too.
“We like the nostalgia fragrance; scents can take you back to childhood,” Cory Cooper said.
Cory and Libby Cooper’s two sons also enjoy helping with the business, and the business has turned into a family effort.
“They like to come up with their own unique ideas for candles, and both of them have come up with a few candles that we put in the store,” Cory Cooper said. “We feel like it kind of helps encourage creativity with them.”
Libby’s Country Candles is open at Eastgate Mall Monday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
