The American Legion Post 450 hosted its annual Memorial Day Parade in Milford on May 29 morning at 401 Main St. From the American Legion, the parade proceeded to Memorial Park, Greenlawn Cemetery and St. Andrew Cemetery for wreath layings and brief ceremonies.

The parade started with a welcome from veterans, police officers and firefighters. as well as Milford City officials. The Milford High School Band also performed songs and marched alongside various groups of girl and boy scout troops.

A large turnout of community members flooded along the sidewalk of Lila Avenue to watch the event. Many people brought chairs, blankets and small flags to show their patriotism.

Councilmember Janet Cooper and her family have been a part of helping the American Legion put together, facilitate and advertise the parade for over five years.

Cooper said the Memorial Day Parade creates a meaningful small-town image of Milford, and she hopes more families and residents continue to come to the parade in future years.

“(The event) remains important to (the) people that attend and honor our veterans and our country,” Cooper said.

Beverly Liming, a Milford native, tries to watch the parade every year; however, this year she’s excited to see her grandson, who is in the band, be a part of the parade. Liming was also in the parade when she played in the band at Milford High School.

But, Liming said her favorite thing about watching the Memorial Day Parade is seeing the different uniforms worn by police officers, firefighters and veterans.

Robert Hansen, a Milford resident, also enjoys coming to the Memorial Day Parade every year. He said he is most looking forward to seeing the community of Milford coming together and having fun watching the parade.

“I’m just a huge fan of the city, and I love it,” Hansen said. “I wanted my pup to see the parade and partake in all the fun.”

The parade’s festivities ended around 11:30 a.m.

The parade was also filmed by ICRC-TV, which can be found here online at https://icrctv.com/video/milford-memorial-day-ceremony-2023.
