At West Clermont Schools, our mission is to “commit to excellence with every learner, every day, in every way.” This means raising the bar and closing the gap for every single student.
In order to meet the unique needs of our diverse student population, we must provide personalized education.
Our student body is comprised of learners with different needs, interests, challenges, and dreams for their future. Because every West Clermont student deserves a quality educational experience, we must broaden our focus. In addition to the basics of reading, writing, and math for each student, we work to ensure that we are preparing every student for success in the workforce of this 21st-century global marketplace. Accordingly, we will establish high standards for learning that we expect all students to achieve. We cannot do this alone. We must collaborate with families and our community to communicate our mission, make plans for execution, and eliminate barriers to learning.
Together, we are called to action to find solutions to simultaneously educate all students to a basic level of proficiency and produce graduates who can think critically – who can solve problems, use creativity, overcome challenges, communicate clearly, collaborate, and navigate vast amounts of information.
We must build plans, processes, and partnerships that guide each child to find their own effective learning practices, to prepare them for lifelong learning. This requires us to activate “possibility thinking.” We must see beyond what we all experienced as children. We need to see the world through the lens of today and explore where we could be tomorrow.
The West Clermont “Roadmap for Success” includes exploring some changes that are important for teaching and learning. We have identified three points of focus: the portrait of a graduate, the portrait of an educator, and the development of our West Clermont Online Academy. To address our portrait of a graduate, we are creating a “north star” for West Clermont by clarifying the set of skills, knowledge, and mindsets that are necessary for all students to be successful in the world of school and beyond.
When a West Clermont graduate walks across the stage to receive their diploma, they will do so with knowledge, skills, and habits we have intentionally instilled in them over the course of their time in our schools. Teachers are the single greatest impact on student learning. Developing a portrait of an educator is an essential piece of producing graduates ready for life beyond West Clermont Schools.
In our fast-paced world, teachers are increasingly challenged to balance a variety of roles: a facilitator of learning, a content expert, a mentor, in addition to various roles to meet the individual needs of students. This requires our educators to continually evolve in their profession.
We are proud of the efforts our staff have made in response to the school closure, fall reopening, and activation of various learning models. We will continue to explore best practices to support and grow our staff for continued retention and success. We are learning a lot about online learning through our response to the global medical crisis.
We believe online learning options have the potential to serve our learners well beyond the global pandemic response. We are exploring options, piloting, and creating a vision for what this might need to look like in West Clermont in the future. In West Clermont, we are reaching beyond “surviving” the pandemic. We are committed to our vision and we continue to dig deep and assess how we can improve throughout the duration of the pandemic and beyond.
Over the course of the next several weeks, we will continue to work with the Board of Education, administrators, and various district design teams to use our best thinking and efforts to research, evaluate, listen and develop the next steps in the implementation of our vision, mission and strategies to create success for all students.
