Three males suspected of stealing a truck in Hamilton County crashed the vehicle in Pierce Twp., leaving all with injuries.
On Aug. 28, a little after 2 a.m, Pierce Township Police Officer Michael Ervin received a notification from the township’s Flock Safety camera system, a type of automatic license plate reader that captures vehicle information, such as license plates, make, model, color, and features like bumper stickers.
The Flock Safety camera system reported that a stolen Honda Ridgeline was in the vicinity of Nine Mile Road and state Route 125 in Pierce Twp.; the vehicle was stolen out of Hamilton County, according to a press release from the Pierce Twp.
Ervin responded and found the vehicle on Nine Mile near Davis Road. He activated his lights and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver sped away, driving “erratically.”
Ervin did not pursue the vehicle because it did not comply with Pierce Twp.’s traffic pursuit policy, which sets forth that officers will only initiate traffic pursuits for violent felonies.
A little while later, Ervin found the vehicle along Bradbury Road, just east of Nine Mile. The driver had crashed through a guardrail and into a wooded area.
Ervin could hear subject(s) running away from the vehicle in the woods, and there was a front-seat passenger trapped in the vehicle.
Ervin called for assistance, and Pierce Twp. firefighters arrived and extracted the passenger, identified as a 17-year-old male. He had significant injuries and was transported via Air Care to University Hospital.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to assist with the investigation and deployed an aviation unit to search the wooded area for the other occupant(s) of the vehicle. No one was found at that time
Later, at about 7:30 a.m., a passerby on Behymer reported that two males were walking on the roadway, and that both were covered in mud and had visible injuries, according to a press release. Officers responded and determined that both subjects were connected with the stolen vehicle. The two males were also transported to University Hospital to be treated for their injuries.
All three males had non-life-threatening injuries. The press release noted that the identities were still being confirmed.
The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the Pierce Twp. Police Department will follow up on the investigation.
