Linda Dollenmeyer of Union Township.

As the days grow longer and the air gets hotter, I think Summerside is a great name for our little community. So just a little more of Summerside and Barg Salt Run.

The train ran through Summerside at one time. Mr. Bargs Grandpa used to take loads of milk to the train, in his horse and buggy. The Methodist church stands empty and for sale. It makes me sad each time I drive by.

Mr. Barg baled hay where the mall is now-also Kroger and Meijer. Hard to imagine, isn’t it?

There were no Union Township police. Mr. Bargs Dad and some store owners did start a volunteer fire department.

Mr. Bargs Uncle remembers you could see the train on Round Bottom Rd. from the farm on Barg Salt Run. There were no trees back then. Mr. Bargs Grandpa and Dad farmed with horses until 1947. His Dad bought a new CO-OP tractor and accessories. Mr. Barg has restored and still has the tractor.

I hope you have enjoyed these memories of Summerside. I wish to thank Mr. Barg for his information and his wonderful, interesting memories. As you go through Eastgate and Summerside remember all the stores and highways and traffic was once farmland.
