Amelia council members approved the purchase of new computers for police during their Sept. 23 meeting.
Police Chief David Friend brought up the purchase during council’s first meeting in September.
He said the commuters they have now are too outdated to be upgraded, but they have lasted a long time.
“We did good with theirs, and have spent no money since I’ve been here,” Friend said about the old computers.
Friend said the department needs to upgrade to Windows 7 or 8 by October to be able to use the current police programs.
After investigating which computers would work best, Friend said requested council purchase four Panasonic Toughbooks for a total of $2,552.
“We can use these with the existing docs,” Friend said about the computer mounts in the cars.
During the Sept. 9 meeting, council members discussed where the money for the computers would come from.
“We have money in the computer fund,” Councilman Derrick Campbell said during the Sept. 9 meeting.
