This year’s Right to Read Week was last week, March 2-6 and everyone at Marr Cook Elementary was asked to participate. The staff and students participated in a fun, spirit week where they highlighted a different Dr. Seuss book every day –
Monday: Sleep Book (pajama day)
Tuesday: Green Eggs and Ham (wear lots of green)
Wednesday: Oh the Places You’ll Go (wear a vacation shirt)
Thursday: I Can Read With My Eyes Shut (favorite words on a shirt)
Friday: Cat in the Hat (hat day)
Everyone enjoyed dressing up and listening to the variety of Dr. Seuss books. Families were even asked to join in on the fun while attending their annual Literacy Night. Over 160 people attended this wonderful event where there were several hands-on literacy activities, meet and greet with the local library, and a chance to win a literacy themed raffle basket.
Aside from spirit week and Literacy Night, Marr Cook’s book vending machine was also restocked with new books, including a great collection from Dr. Seuss. Most of these books were donated in memory of Mrs. Marge Edwards who had an impressive teaching career in Goshen that spanned 43 years, followed by her volunteer work and leadership with the Ohio Reads and Project More programs. Mrs. Edwards was not only a Dr. Seuss fan but she was also a wonderful educator, one who is still encouraging the love of reading. At Marr Cook Elementary, they often say that Readers are Leaders. But there’s another important thing to remember, there is no app to replace your lap – please read to your children each and every day.
