The Williamsburg Garden Club will host its annual Plant Auction on May 4.

The group canceled their sale last year because of COVID-19.

Williamsburg Garden Club President Sherri Kissinger said, “We are back this year and hoping for a good turnout.”

This year’s auction will be held at Williamsburg High School at 500 S. 5th St., beginning at 6:30 p.m.

In prior years, the auction had been held at the middle school.

Organizers say that the high school will allow for additional space.

Signage directing attendees to the event will be placed throughout Williamsburg and on the high school campus.

All are invited to join in an evening of fun, great flowers, plants, door prizes and light refreshments.

A variety of plants and garden supplies will be available for purchase, Williamsburg Garden Club Secretary Liz Betemps explained.

Cash and checks will be accepted.

Betemps said that native plants, among others, will be highlighted during the auction.

She also shared that many of the plants come from the gardens of the club members.

“It’s great getting a plant that you know has done well in the area,” Betemps explained.

This year marks the 85th anniversary of the Williamsburg Garden Club and its plant auction.

“We are so excited about our plant auction,” Betemps said. “It’s a great opportunity for people to come out and get plants for their own home, and get some unusual plants too.”

She explained that the Williamsburg Garden Club depends on the proceeds from the annual auction to help fund the collage scholarships that the club gives each year to Williamsburg students.

The proceeds also help pay for all the plantings – window boxes along the bridge and planters on the each street corner – that the club maintains throughout Williamsburg.

Betemps encourages gardeners form all walks of life to attend and join the club, including young people and those who may have discovered their interest during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Not a meeting goes by that we don’t pick up another member, so we’d love to continue to encourage members, and certainly coming to the plant auction is a good way to learn more about the club and what we do,” Betemps said. “Certainly, younger members too; we have a lot of older women who have been doing this for decades, so younger is great.”
