Cincinnati, OH — Pediatric Associates of Mt. Carmel will distribute free bike helmets to children during the Put a Lid on It! event at Veterans Memorial Park on Saturday, June 13. The program, introduced in 2011 by the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (Ohio AAP), educates youth on the importance of bicycle safety.
In collaboration with Union Township Police and Fire, this family-friendly event will feature activities and education around proper helmet use. More than a hundred bike helmets will be given away to local youth while supplies last. Kids and their families are invited to attend from 10 a.m. to noon to get fitted for their bike helmet and chat with PAMC’s board-certified pediatricians.
“As we gear up for another year of Put a Lid on It!, we’re reminded of the vital role bike helmets play in the safety of our children,” said Christopher Peltier, MD, Pediatric Associates of Mt. Carmel. “Each helmet represents a commitment to reducing preventable injuries and ensuring Ohio’s youth can have fun while mitigating the risk.”
With a rise in electronic bikes and scooters, along with traditional cycling, Ohio AAP reports that hospitalization rates from injuries have increased by nearly 80% from 2020 to 2024. Currently in Ohio, estimates indicate that just 10-20% of children wear bike helmets. Helmet use can reduce the risk of head injury by 85% and severe brain injury by 88%.
In 2025 alone, the Put a Lid on It! program distributed more than 13,000 helmets to 175 organizations in 62 counties across Ohio.
The Put a Lid on It! program through the Ohio Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics (Ohio AAP) has distributed more than 130,000 bike helmets to Ohio’s children since 2011.
