Milford’s Campbell makes history at state

Milford’s Brady Campbell did a few things at the OHSAA Division I Swim & Dive Meet.

The sophomore earned medals in three events, set a school record and guided the Eagles to a sixth-place finish at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton.

Those medals were gold, silver and bronze — a solid Saturday afternoon for the sophomore.

Campbell became the first swimmer in Milford’s history to earn a state title in the sport when he won the boys 50-yard freestyle with a school-record time of 19.93 seconds. He beat his prelim time of 20.22 seconds by .29 seconds. Campbell then won silver in the 100-yard butterfly by touching the ball in 48.50 seconds, also setting a school record in the event.

Campbell also participated in the 200-yard freestyle relay team that earned bronze. The quartet of Campbell, Landon Crum, Cameron Barclay and Emmett Fentress broke their prelim time of 1:24.64 with a mark of 1:23.79, a school record.

Other finishers for Milford included Fentress, seventh place, 100-yard butterfly, 49.74, and 10th, 100-yard freestyle, 46.58; Barclay, ninth, 500-yard freestyle, 4:39.58; and Crum, 22nd, 100-yard backstroke, 52.66.

Milford finished sixth with 136 points. Columbus St. Charles won the boys Division I title with 311, followed by St. Xavier with 310 and Upper Arlington with 192.

West Clermont’s Bryce Cousins earned hardware from the OHSAA Dive State Meet.

The sophomore placed fifth in the Division I competition Feb. 19 at the C.T. Branin Natatorium in Canton. His fifth-place finish topped his freshman season when he came in 11th place.

The All-American scored 219.85 points in the preliminary round to advance to the semifinals and made the cut by posting a 337.30 and advancing to the finals. In the finals round, the sophomore scored 447.10 points to place fifth.
