Two Williamsburg High School bowlers are examples of what their coach describes as “an enormous hidden talent within the community,” and are representing the school in the Division II district tournament this week.
Freshman Lawrence McVicker, coach Kristi McVicker’s son, rolled a three-game 491 series in the sectional tournament at Cherry Grove Lanes, placing 29th overall and earning the final individual qualifying spot. Junior Lily McDow was also the final qualifier from the girls field, with a 384 to place 28th.
Lawrence McVicker took up bowling at his mom’s request, to fill out the roster. Bowling is one of three sports he plays at the school, “Though a year ago this may not have been his option,” Kristi McVicker said, noting that Lawrence dislocated a patella in February 2024. “Lawrence’s recovery has been long and tiresome but he has never given up on competing in anything that he puts his mind to … Now he is my walking, talking, and inspiring recruiter for this bowling team.”
McDow “hates recognition” Kristi McVicker said. “I named her team captain right off the bat because of the way she handles herself and the structure of our girls team. Lily makes decisions before I even deliver my input and she is spot on, willing to give it that extra initiative to work harder and figure the right strategy out especially for the baker games.”
