On April 19, engineering students from Goshen High School participated in the 2024 Regional FlexFactor competition at Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio. As part of a satellite program partnership with the Great Oaks Career Center, our students showcased their innovative capabilities, earning an impressive second-place finish in a challenging and competitive environment.
At the regional level, our teams showcased their projects, which had previously earned them victories in their local semester competitions. The team from the second semester, Teddy Cares, introduced an interactive wellness teddy bear that not only employed technology for personal care but also captured the audience and judges’ attention, earning them an exciting second place out of 45 students from a dozen different schools. This impressive finish reflects the project’s outstanding quality and the team’s effective presentation skills.
Meanwhile, the team from the first semester, Perfect Power, developed a sensor to tackle energy waste, designed to automatically shut off appliances to save energy. Their project was well-received for its innovation and practical application, although a minor overrun in their presentation time by seven seconds resulted in a penalty that impacted their overall ranking knocking them out of the awards ceremony for top finishers.
Sponsored by the Department of Defense and facilitated by NextFlex, the FlexFactor program is designed to enhance students’ critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative skills. It also exposes them to potential careers in STEM and advanced manufacturing, supporting our educational objectives at Goshen High School and our partnership with the Great Oaks Career Center.
This competition highlights our commitment to providing a strong STEM education and valuable hands-on experiences. It gives our students a crucial platform to apply their knowledge in real-world settings, preparing them for future academic and career challenges.
We are incredibly proud of both teams for their hard work and innovation. Special thanks to Mr. Eugene Talbot for his ongoing support and mentorship, which have been instrumental in nurturing our students’ potential.
We look forward to continuing our participation in enriching programs like FlexFactor, encouraging our students to explore and excel. Congratulations to all the participants, especially our second-place regional team for their impressive performance.
