The Williamsburg Wildcats girls basketball team clinched the SBAAC National Division outright after defeating Clermont Northeastern 44-32 at Williamsburg High School on Jan. 30. The win improved the team to 14-5 on the season and maintained their perfect league record (8-0).
The game started out with a short 6-0 run by CNE, including four points from Rockets forward Grace Pride. Not even two minutes into the first quarter Wildcats head coach Tracy Rieke called a timeout. “You know, I just told them that, you know, if we come out flat against good teams we may or may not be able to overcome it.” Tonight the Wildcats were able to.
Rieke’s team got CNE speed up and out of the same rhythm and juice they had in the first few minutes. Behind four first quarter points from Peyton Jones Williamsburg led 12-10 at the end of the first quarter. During the second quarter, Burg grabbed control of the game behind strong defense and success going to the basket. They led 24-14 at the break behind eight points from Peyton Jones and six points from Emily Early.
