Nick Ayers has seen his share of winning football over his 12-year head coaching career, but his 2023 squad may have set a new standard.
The Williamsburg High school coach – in his second season at the school after 10 in the West Clermont School District (five at Glen Este and five at the combined West Clermont High School) – said this season’s Wildcats took the game to a new level – and did so quickly. Williamsburg went 10-2 overall and 4-1 in the Southern Buckeye Conference National Division, earning a share of the title with Bethel-Tate and Blanchester. Bethel-Tate defeated Williamsburg 22-20 in the ninth week of the season; the Wildcats also lost to Anna, 52-28, in the second round of the Division VI Region 24 playoffs.
Ten wins and the 73-0 home playoff victory over Dixie Oct. 27 were firsts in school history.
Ayers said the team’s expectations were to win the SBAAC and “make a run” to Canton – site of the Ohio High School Athletic Association state finals – and while that second goal came up short, it was about the only time all season the Wildcats stopped running.
