Well, guess what? My grands are getting ready for school. I think everyone else must be also. The stores are full of “school supplies!” Shoppers’ carts are full of paper, pencils, pens, folders, crayons, you name it. My grands seem to be more worried about what to wear. Well, they are girls. Five in high school, one in 8th grade. You know what they need? Cropped top, short skirt, hey dudes, gym shoes. Geez Louise!

I am trying to remember what I wanted when I returned to school in the “Long Ago.” A circle felt skirt. Crinolin to go under the skirt. Top? I don’t remember. When I was in Jr.High we wore white gym shoes with hose. You remember hose? Right! Garter belt? Geez. I don’t remember anyone with a backpack. We carried our books in our arms, or you could tie a belt around the books and kinda haul ‘em around. Now everyone has a backpack. Kids, teachers, moms, dads, everyone, everywhere. What in the world do they carry in those bags?

As for school supplies. I think I needed a binder, you know, to put your notebook paper in (not college-ruled). A pencil, maybe a pen. But you couldn’t use a pen ‘til High School. That was it. If you needed anything different the teacher told you after class started.

What do I remember the most about school? That I could read before I ever went to school. I read the whole reader in one night. I still read a lot! I was awful in math. I just didn’t get it. Still don’t. Most of all I remember my friends. Barbara, my best friend since 1st grade. I just saw Bill Puckett at Meijer. He was the first person I saw when I entered the 1st-grade room. I’ll see them and many more this weekend. It is CNE’s Alumni. Just my class Friday nite and all classes on Saturday. I am looking forward to seeing if they all look older than me. LOL!

I hope your memories of school are happy. I hope you learned a lot. Most of all I hope You have been blessed!
