The Clermont Sun

Farewell to The Sunday Sun

For the Clermont County residents who also subscribed to our free paper, The Sunday Sun, you may already know this news after receiving Sunday’s paper; for those who don’t, let me be the one to tell you: After 40 years, The Sunday Sun, previously known as The Buying Guide, ceased publication with the Oct. 3, 2021 edition.

The Sunday Sun has operated in a unique space under The Clermont Sun Publishing Company’s umbrella first, because it’s free and secondly, because its identity has never been quite clear. I can’t speak to its earlier history, but within the last 10 or so years, the free paper used to offer actual news and sports coverage, often on a delayed rotating basis from what was offered in this paper, The Clermont Sun.

Over time, that practice was rightly seen as odd. After all, we gotta eat, folks! And so, we wanted to, and still do want to, push people to the subscription fee-based paper you’re holding (or digitally holding, as it were). As that happened, The Sunday Sun instead became a platform for community-based news submitted to me. I’m not sure people realize the amount of items I get submitted to me by individuals, organizations, schools and the like, but it’s a lot. It’s certainly more than I can fit in The Clermont Sun, so The Sunday Sun became a way to supplement our local vibe with more school stories, more event notices and more photos, like one of our long-running favorite features, the Beauty Spot.

Even though it was of secondary importance because it was free, I always took great pride in putting together The Sunday Sun every Wednesday afternoon to showcase the awesome students in our county, the great work our local veterns organizations do and other local happenings that quite frankly, other papers wouldn’t have the time or space to highlight.

So, while I’m sad to see The Sunday Sun go, I do want to reassure residents in Clermont County of two vital things:

You Sudoku-loving people will still be able to enjoy the Sudoku, previously featured in The Sunday Sun in The Clermont Sun going forward by starting a subscription today, if you haven’t already.

My commitment to highlighting and showcasing local happenings is as strong as it has always been. I will continue to get as many submitted community items into The Clermont Sun as I can and for those items that don’t make the cut, they will find a place on our website at clermontsun.com and featured on our various social media accounts.

Along with The Sunday Sun ending, we are also raising our subscription rates for The Clermont Sun. A six-month subscription is now $20 and a full-year is $35. Those who live out of the county will see rates at $25 for six months and $40 for a year. We will honor our old renewal rates for the next 30 days.

For just 67 cents a week, we will continue to deliver local Clermont County news and sports to your doorstep (or virtual doorstep), but don’t forget, we also regularly have supplemental issues, including the Pumpkin Run Nationals, the Rod Rumbler, the Clermont County Fair, Breast Cancer Awareness, Senior Living, our annual Graduation issue and of course, Seasons magazine on semi-regular basis.

To emphasize the point, I can confidently say nobody in the Tristate area offers the sort of comprehensive coverage of local sports (boys and girls) that our sports editor, Garth Shanklin, does. His coverage alone is worth your 67 cents a week.

Megan Alley, our reporter since 2015, has local knowledge and contacts developed over that more than six-year period unmatched by anyone. So much so that outside, national reporters from The New York Times have leaned on her knowledge. With your 67 cents a week, you’re getting her knowledge and coverage you can count on.

We appreciate you, our readers, and will continue to provide local news and sports to you.

If you’re already a subscriber, we hope you stick with us and if you’re picking us up at the racks, we hope you take a chance on us by starting a subscription today. After all, subscribing represents a $17 yearly savings!
