On any given day, downtown Cleveland, Ohio is busy with people handling their personal matters without incident. But on March 24, 2013, a nurse named Aliza Sherman had arrived downtown to meet Gregory Moore, her divorce attorney, Her hearing was 48 hours away. She planned to discuss any final details about her pending divorce from Doctor Sanford Sherman.
Aliza had received a text message from Moore to discuss her case on a Sunday evening. She agreed to meet Moore at his office located outside the Cleveland Galleria.
After 5 p.m., authorities received a 911 call from a man named Kenny Shepherd. He worked in the building and heard Sherman screaming for help. He arrived to find Sherman dying
An unknown killer had stabbed her 11 times in the head, neck, back, and arm. The killer had targeted her and wanted to ensure she didn’t survive.
This crime has several unusual twists. For instance, a video camera captured the killer fleeing the scene. The killer wore a hood or something to protect his or her identity. Today, the killer’s identity, race, and gender is unknown.
Authorities also learned that Aliza’s attorney, Gregory Moore, had lied to them. Moore claimed to be in his office, but phone records, keycard data, and witnesses said otherwise, Moore left his office an hour before Aliza died and didn’t return until an hour after her death.
So why didn’t he wait in his office for Aliza’s arrival? Did he leave knowing she would never arrive to speak to him? And where did he go while she lay dying in front of his office? I didn’t find any additional details.
But I am sure the police already asked the same questions. Authorities haven’t charged Gregory Moore with any involvement in Aliza’s death.
The media has tried to interview Moore about why he lied about his whereabouts during Aliza’s death. He has declined to provide any answers. Moore had also previously called in fake bomb threats to courthouses to avoid hearings. The bomb threats aren’t relevant to Aliza’s homicide, but demonstrate Moore’s character flaws.
Cuyahoga County authorities are working with other law enforcement agencies to solve this murder. Authorities report there are persons of interest in this homicide, but won’t reveal any names.
Jan Lash, who was Aliza’s best friend, has spoken to the media about her frustration with law enforcement. She would like the names revealed. Lash has said the homicide should already be solved.
Who would kill Aliza Sherman? The obvious suspect would be her husband. The spouse or significant other is always the first suspect to rule out. Cleveland 19 news contacted Sanford Sherman about his estranged wife. Sherman now lives in Florida. He didn’t respond to a request for an interview.
You must also look at her former attorney.
Why did he ask Aliza to meet him when he wasn’t in his office?
It’s reasonable to ask because he lied to the police, which landed him in jail. Aliza’s supporters are still trying to figure out who killed her. Since her death, friends meet annually to commemorate their friend’s memory. However, because of the Corona virus, they could not do so this year. Instead, they connected through a Zoom video conference.
I have visited the Justice for Aliza Sherman Facebook page and viewed several entries. It’s clear to see so many people loved her. She deserves justice. A masked coward murdered Aliza and made sure she suffered an agonizing death. She may have even known her killer’s identity.
There is a substantial reward being offered for any tips leading to Aliza’s killer. Please contact Crime Stoppers at 216-252-7463. You can remain anonymous. If you know something about this homicide, please make the call that gives Aliza’s family and friends justice.
