It is believed to be the first NSDAR grave marker dedication to be held there. Dorothy Kelly Fortney was a thirty year member of the Mariemont Ohio Chapter NSDAR. The marker was unveiled by family member Rosalyn Dowling, member of the Dr. Elisha Dick Chapter in Virginia.

Dorothy Kelly Fortney, of Batavia, passed suddenly on May 8, 2019 at the age of 93. She was the daughter of Jesse and Benjamin Harrison Kelly of Masontown, West Virginia. Dorothy was a direct descendant of American Revolutionary War Patriot Peter Carrico, who was born before 1743 in Charles Co, VA and died post 1803 in Monongalia County VA.

Dorothy will always be remembered as a great mother who was very active in many humanitarian endeavors. She was very patriotic and proud to be a thirty year member of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR). The DAR, founded in 1890, is a non-profit, non-political volunteer women’s service organization dedicated to promoting patriotism, preserving American history, and securing America’s future through better education for children.

Any woman 18 years or older-regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background-who can prove lineal descent from a patriot of the American Revolution, is eligible for membership. To find out more information about the National Society, go to www.dar.org.

After the dedication ceremony, members of the Woodburn Chapter NSDAR joined Dorothy’s family and friends for refreshments at Miller’s Sweets and Eats in Masontown, WV.
