The village of Amelia council appointed a new council member during a special meeting held on Feb. 27.

The council voted unanimously for Mathew Walriven to fill the seat left vacant by former council member Derrick Campbell, who resigned late last month.

In his resignation letter, Campbell listed his reason for leaving as, “My time will be better spent with my family.”

If the council had not made an appointment inside of 30 days, the task would have been deferred to the mayor.

Doug Fischer, council member and vice mayor, explained that the council was able to make such a quick appointment because Walriven had submitted his application and was interviewed for an earlier vacancy on the council.

Walriven was also sworn in by Hart during the special meeting.
