George Rooks: The pig roast is coming in August

Howdy folks–The weather seems to be a little cooler. The hot weather was very uncomfortable but we need to take it and do the best we can. I don’t have an air-conditioner here in my house but I have been comfortable.

The pig roast is coming up at the St. Mary’s Church here in Bethel on August 4 from 4 PM to 8 PM. The menu is BBQ pulled pork or chicken. If this doesn’t excite you, they have brats, metts and hotdogs. On the menu also is sweet corn, green beans, mac-n-cheese, baked beans and coleslaw. They have several choices of desserts and will also have iced tea, lemonade and soft drinks. Music will be by Adam Rutherford. This will be a fun afternoon so mark your calendar.

I remember a program on TV where a feller said “this is my town.“ Well Bethel is my town. There is so much going on. There is a great fire department, plenty of churches to attend, a great Police Department, good restaurants, and extra good banks. The hardware stores have items which the big ones don’t have and the Ben Franklin store now run by the third generation of the same family. That is special! There is also the Bethel Lions Club that I have been a member of for 45 years and enjoy it.

As I was writing this I looked out the window and saw a squirrel being chased by Mr. Chester. Now that wasn’t much of a chase since the squirrel went up a tree and stopped and started barking at Chester. Mr. Chester just stopped and looked at the squirrel. I have a “Have a Heart Trap” that I set at night and when I looked at the trap this morning there were three little raccoons looking at me. I didn’t have a camera to take a picture so I just turn them loose. Two of the raccoons ran to the woods in the third one ran a few feet and looked at me as if to say “Thanks.”

I have a deer that comes each evening to eat grass and of course eat some of the garden items that I have not fence good. The other morning about 7 AM I saw a raccoon eating green apples. I wonder if the coon had an upset stomach like our parents told us we would have when we were young and ate the green apples?

I had an order for a bat house from some folks in Indiana. Their family live over by New Richmond and I built the bat house this morning for these folks. I have built several of them. Now folks, when driving please watch out for deer especially the little ones. A fellar at Lions Club said he had a deer cross in front of him and when he stopped there were three little ones following their mother so be careful.

Mr. Chester is doing fine.

Start your week by going to the house of worship of your choice and praising the good Lord.

God bless all . . .
