George Rooks: The joys of mowing for neighbors

Howdy folks–We have sure had a lot of rain. The gardens, farm crops and weeds are sure growing fast. That probably is better than dry weather. As I was looking out the window I saw a different bird so I got the bird book and it was a northern flicker. This bird is in the woodpecker family. It has a white patch visible only when flying and a red spot on the nape of its neck. There are more markings on this bird so get a bird book to look at all the birds.

I mow about 10 acres of grass for the neighbors. They have horses and a big barn so the barn swallows fly around to get insects to feed their babies when I’m mowing. I enjoy watching them and how quick they can turn. I was mowing Friday and saw a tree swallow catching insects for their babies.

Got a letter from Gloria Smith at the Laurel Methodist Church. They will be having a rummage sale on Friday, July 6, from 9 AM till 1 PM. Lunch will be sold from 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM. If you are not interested in the rummage sale go and get some good food. I read something the other day that went like this – a raindrop landing on your cheek is a kiss from someone that lives in heaven and is watching over you. I would hope that is true. I sure miss Ruth Ann.

Don’t forget the Monroe Grange will have a yard sale at the Grange Hall in Nicholsville on Saturday, July 7, from 9 AM till 3 PM. Then at 6 PM a card party where we will play euchre. This is a good time. Then on July 14, at the same place, the Monroe Grange Hall, there will be a homemade ice cream social with food-desserts of pie and cake. You can come and visit with your friends. The ice cream social is a very famous event so you all come.

Have you ever thought if you have extra time on your hands about volunteering? There is a real need. The Clermont Senior Services have different services you could get involved in like meals on wheels, homecare, transportation to doctors visits and other different types of activities. I go and talk to the seniors at the lodge once a month. There are usually about 50 or 60 there. The Clermont County Senior Services is a wonderful organization.

The second Friday of each month, the Catholic Church here in Bethel has their food pantry starting at 11 AM till 12:30 PM. Paula and I always go and pass out the produce. This is a wonderful event.

Mr. Chester is doing fine.

Start your week by going to the house of worship of your choice and praising the good Lord.

God bless all . . .
