Girl Scouts and the outdoors go together like a campfire and s’mores. From hiking tough trails to spending action-packed summers at camp, endless opportunities for girl-led, outdoor adventures await every G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, LeaderTM)!

Registration is now open for Girl Scout summer camps located throughout western Ohio, including day and resident camps. A complete list of prices, dates, times, and program options for camp sessions available in June, July, and August can be found at gswo.org/camp.

You’ll find a wide variety of programs for all your girl’s different interests, including archery, swimming, watercrafts, acting/drama, hiking, adventure trips, and much more. No matter which camp you choose or whether your girl stays a day, a week, or longer, she’ll never forget the smell of s’mores by the fire, exploring the outdoors, and seeing the stars shine brightly overhead.

A tradition central to Girl Scouts since 1912

Today’s camps are highly evolved, matching the interests of twenty-first-century girls. Girl Scouts moves at the speed of girls, which is evident in its wide range of camp offerings—everything from classic summer camp experiences to STEM camp and the new Air Camp, where girls will learn to pilot a real aircraft from Dayton Wright Brothers Airport in Miamisburg under the direction and support of an FAA certified pilot instructor. Girl Scouts is committed to pursuing its mission through the camp experience, offering an astounding array of innovative, fun, and memorable camp activities that allow girls to build courage, confidence, and character, and make the world a better place.

Benefits of Outdoor Experiences for Girls

Research by the Girl Scout Research Institute, More Than S’mores, affirms that girls benefit immensely from time spent outdoors.

“When my daughter came home from camp, she was notably more confident and filled with stories about trying new things, overcoming fears, and making friends,” said Tami, whose 10-year-old daughter attended week-long resident camp.

Camp builds problem-solvers and exposes girls to new experiences! Girls with more frequent outdoor experiences are more likely to seek challenges and are better at solving problems—qualities that will help them embark on a lifetime of leadership, both academically and personally.

Camp builds courage and confidence! Spending time in nature improves a girl’s concentration and creative reasoning. Outdoor experiences also help promote healthy social development and increase her self-esteem.

“Going to camp is often the first time girls are away from home on their own,” said Vicki Proctor, Outdoor Program and Partnerships Team Leader for Girl Scouts of Western Ohio. “We provide a safe environment and trained, caring adults who really teach girls how to be independent. They learn how to wake up on their own, make their beds, attend activities on time, and keep track of their belongings – things some girls have never done before.”
