The nightcap of the Eastern Cincinnati Conference doubleheader on Friday, Dec. 15 was quite the contest.

West Clermont traveled north to Milford to take on the undefeated Eagles. Milford entered play 4-0 overall, 2-0 in the league while West Clermont began play 2-1 overall, 1-1 in the league.

The game was a battle on both sides of the ball. The teams were tied at 11 after one quarter, with the largest lead at any point in the period just three points.

The second quarter saw the Wolves attempt to pull away early. West Clermont scored the first eight points of the period, five of which came from former Anderson Redskin Jay Tiemeyer. Milford answered ,however, cutting the lead to 19-16, then 21-19 before taking a two-point lead themselves with 1:29 remaining. West Clermont tied the game up less than 20 seconds later, but Milford’s Hunter Pollitt connected on a free-throw to put the Eagles on top by one point at the break, 24-23.

It was Milford’s turn to pull away in the third quarter. The Eagles jumped ahead 33-28 at one point late in the period, only to see West Clermont answer with a Tiemeyer jump shot just before the end of the quarter. Milford led 33-30 after three periods.

The fourth quarter was a back-and-forth battle. West Clermont re-took the lead 34-33 with 6:50 remaining, only to see Milford socre eight straight points from the 6:50 mark of the quarter to the 4:33 mark of the period.

The Wolves came back with an answer of their own, scoring six straight points to cut the lead to 41-40 with 2:38 remaining.

Milford connected on a three-pointer from Nathan Gallimore, only to see Tiemeyer answer with a three of his own. The Eagles scored four quick points to take a 48-43 lead with less than a minute remaining, which is when the fouls began.

Milford hit both free-throws with 31 seconds left to go up by five. Tiemeyer connected on a three-pointer to cut the lead to two. Gallimore hit a pair of free-throws with 18 seconds left, and Dallas Padgitt scored a basket and a foul to cut the lead to 52-51 with nine seconds left.

West Clermont fouled Jake Ayler, who made one of two. The Wolves dribbled back upcourt, but Tiemeyer’s shot from the left wing was no good, ending the game in a 53-51 Milford victory.

Tiemeyer led all scorers with 24 points. Padgitt finished with a double-double, scoring 18 points and securing 10 rebounds.  No other West Clermont player scored more than three points.

For Milford, Ayler led the way with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists. Steven Huxell scored 11 points and added a pair of rebounds. Gallimore chipped in eight points, with Pollitt adding five.

Milford returns to the court on Friday, December 29 with a road contest against Edgewood. West Clermont’s next matchup comes on Dec. 22 against St. Xavier.
