The Batavia High School Hall of Fame Class of 2015.
The Batavia Athletic Department inducted its 2015 Hall of Fame class on Thursday, Dec. 3 at a ceremony held at the high school.

The class was made up of eight individuals: Greg Poynter, Daniel Brian Miller, Vince Kennedy, James (J.D.) Fugate, Joey Moorehead, Ed Jucker, Stephen A. Shinkle and Dennis G. Wells.

Apart from the induction ceremony on Dec. 3, the inductees were honored between the junior varsity and varsity basketball games against New Richmond on Dec. 4.

Greg Poynter, Class of 1990

Poynters achievements include: National Football Scholar Athlete Award, 1989; AP All-State Special Mention (football), 1989; 1st Team AP Southwest Region (football), 1989; Miami Valley Conference 1st Team Offense ,1989; Bulldog Award (MVP – football), 1989; Cincinnati Enquirer/Post 1st Team All-City (football), 1989; Miami Valley Conference Wrestling Champ at 189 lb., 1989-90; and 1989-90 LaRosa’s Batavia Athlete of the Year.

Daniel Brian Miller, Class of 1989

Miller’s accolades include: MVC League Wrestling Champ 189lb., 1988-89; Sectional Wrestling Champ 189 lb., 1988-89; Football, 1st Team MVC, City, District, State, 1987-88 – offensive guard; East/West All Star Game, 1989; John Boggs Award, 1989; and U.S. Marine Corp Distinguished Athlete Award, 1989.

Vince Kennedy, Class of 1991

Kennedy’s credentials include: 1st Team All State Defensive Back – Sr.; 1st Team All District Football – Jr. & Sr.; 1st Team All MVC Football – Jr. & Sr.; MVC Defensive Player of the Year – Sr.; 1st Team MVC Baseball – Sr.; 2nd Team MVC Basketball – Sr.; and four year Letterer in Baseball, Basketball, and Football.

James (J.D.) Fugate, Class of 1999

Fugate’s accomplishments include: 1st Team All State Wide Receiver – Sr.; State Honorable Mention Defensive Back – Sr.; 1st Team All City Wide Receiver – Sr.; SBC 1st Team Wide Receiver – Jr.& Sr.; SBC 1st Team Defensive Back – Sr.’ SBC Co-Player of the Year – Sr.; Southwest Ohio Football Coaches Association All Star – Sr.; SBC 1st Team All-Star- Baseball – Sr.; and Football Team Captain – Jr.& Sr.

Joey Moorehead, Class of 1993

Moorehead’s accolades include: Southwest Ohio All District First Team Defense – Sr.; 2nd Team “All Ohio” – Sr.; MVC All Conference Defense Award – Jr. & Sr.; College of Mt. St. Joseph Football Team Captain; MVC All Academic Selection Jr. & Sr.; East/West All Star Game Participant – Sr.; Cincinnati Enquirer All Star Football Team – Jr.; Batavia Booster Scholar Athlete Award – Jr. & Sr.; Cincinnati Post All Metro 2nd Team Defense; John Boggs Award MVC Honorable Mention Baseball – Sr.; and Batavia Varsity Basketball Team Captain – Sr.

Ed Jucker, Coach 1940-41

Ed Jucker started his teaching and coaching career at Batavia High School and was the basketball coach for the 1940-41 seasons obtaining a 4-6 record. The team nickname was the “Juckermans.” Coach Jucker left Batavia after one-year to enlist in the Armed Services during WWII.

His other credentials include: NCAA Basketball Champs 1961 & 1962; NBA Cincinnati Royals Head Coach; University of Cincinnati Athletic Hall of Fame; and Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame.

Stephen A. Shinkle, Class of 1973

Shinkle’s accomplishments include: Five consecutive MVC Championships – 1993-1997; Numerous League, Sectional and District Champions & Placers Numerous multiple state qualifiers and state placers; Founder of the Batavia Youth Wrestling Program; 5 Time Miami Valley Conference “Coach of the Year”; Twice voted SWOWCA “Coach of the Year”; Clermont County League Wrestling Champion – Sr.; Respected Sectional and District Tournament Manager; BHS Athletic Boosters Coach of the Year; OHSAA Registered Wrestling Official – 30 years; OHSAA Meritorious Award recognizing 30 years of service; GCWOA Merit Award for service in the Sport of Wrestling 1993 & 2000; and OHSAA State Award for Ethics, Integrity & Sportsmanship.

Dennis G. Wells, Class of 1968

Wells was the Batavia Athletic Director from 1996 – 2005 and the wrestling coach from 1980 – 1992.

Other accolades include: Miami Valley Conference Wrestling Champs, 1986 – 1992 (seven consecutive championships); Sectional Wrestling Champs, 1985, ‘86, ‘87, ‘91 and ‘92; District Wrestling Champs, 1984 and 1987; Numerous League, Sectional and District Champions & Placers; State Wrestling Tournament Placers & Participants; State Swimming ,4 State Qualifiers & Placers; Miami Valley Conference Wrestling Coach of the Year, 1986-1992; Miami Valley Conference Baseball Coach of the Year, 1989; Cincinnati Enquirer/Cincinnati Post Coach of Year for DII & DIII, 1984 and 1987; Greater Cincinnati Wrestling Coaches Association – Coach of the Year, 1992; 1st Coach for Batavia Girls’ Soccer Team, Swimming & Crew Teams; and First AD to sell stadium “Naming Rights” in the United States.

As Athletic Director for Batavia Local Schools, Wells worked hard to provide opportunities for the student-athletes of Batavia. Under his tenure, he added Swimming, Bowling and Crew to the list of opportunities for the student/athletes of Batavia Local Schools. His determination in providing first class facilities while maintaining a funding mechanism to improve the facilities, led Dennis to selling the naming rights to the football stadium, which made Batavia the first school to have a corporate sponsor (Holman Family).

Wells’ goal was to be the best teacher that he could possibly be for the students of Batavia Local Schools and was instrumental in building up the Biology departments for the High School.
