Amelia village council members gave Police Chief David Friend the OK to hire two new part-time police officers during their March 25 meeting and accepted the resignation of a full-time officer.

“I recommend we hire two part-time officers,” Friend said during the meeting. “One to replace a part-time officer that may go into a full-time position.”

Friend said they already have several part-time police officer applicants from the last time the village advertised for a part-time police officer that they will use to hire the new officers.

Amelia Mayor Todd Hart suggested Friend begin the hiring process.

Later in the meeting after council returned from executive session, council members accepted the resignation of full-time police officer Coby Murrell.

Hart suggested council schedule a special meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 27 to swear in a new full-time police officer.

During the special meeting, part-time officer Shane Olson was sworn in as a full-time officer, according to Amelia Village Administrator Julie Wartman.

“He has been with the village since 1999,” Wartman said.

Wartman said the village currently has five full-time police officers, including Chief Friend, and has three part-time officers until the two new part-time officers are hired.
