Helton had originally committed to Olivet Nazarene University pending the outcome of his application to West Point, but will instead attend the U.S. Military Academy and be a member of its baseball team.
Helton earned first team All-Eastern Cincinnati Conference honors as a designated hitter last season, when he batted .375 with 12 doubles, two home runs and 19 RBI. He was also the team’s offensive player of the year and earned a spot on ECC All-Academic Team.
As a sophomore, Helton appeared in 21 games, hitting .292 with four doubles and 16 RBI. The Army baseball program is currently led by interim head coach Matt Reid, a six-year member of the Black Knight staff, entering his first year as head coach. Army finished the 2013 season with a 29-23 record and earned an NCAA Regional berth after winning the Patriot League title. So far in 2014, the Black Knights are 5-4 overall.
Ty is the son of Paul and Joy Helton.
Helton is now the second member of the Milford Class of 2014 that will continue his academic and athletic career at a service academy. Soccer standout Thomas Moore recently announced his commitment to the U.S. Naval Academy.
Helton is also the third member of the Eagles’ baseball squad to announce collegiate playing intentions, joining Hunter Losekamp and Andrew Minton.
