The Clermont Northeastern High School newspaper, The Jyst, and several staff members have won six awards at the Ohio Scholastic Media Association Competition. The competition is open to schools across the state, and is held at Kent State University.

“I’m really proud of them,” journalism teacher Becky Rowe said.

The newspaper won an overall Second Place rating, and the staff was awarded an Excellent in the Editorial category.

Staff member Makayla Mohring received Honorable Mention in the News Feature category, and Chrissy Mullins was recognized with Honorable Mention in the Editorial Cartoonist category. Abbi Pritchard received an Excellent in the Sports Feature category, and Tess Siebert received Honorable Mention in the Personality Profile category.

Tess Siebert is the editor of The Jyst.

“We work really hard together to create a paper that informs the whole student body,” Siebert said. “My favorite parts are working with Indesign and just working with the whole staff.”

The Jyst is an entirely student-run newspaper. Rowe says that her role is to provide guidance, and that the students are responsible for choosing their topics, the artwork, and for designing the paper.

“They run the program,” Rowe said. “The only thing they don’t do is print it.”
