State Auditor Dave Yost stopped in Clermont County April 19 to visit with Clermont County Auditor Linda Fraley.
Yost said he has been traveling throughout Ohio making stops to talk to county auditors and people in the business community.
“By getting out of Columbus I am hearing directly what is important to them,” Yost said about his visit.
Yost said he tries to make a trip once or twice a year.
“It’s mostly a round table about what’s going on in the field,” Yost said.
Yost and Fraley said they discussed things that are working well, challenges in the field, and upcoming changes that they must be prepared for.
“I’ve always been impressed by his commitment to keeping costs down,” Fraley said about Yost.
Fraley said auditors protect tax payers by making sure money is being spent correctly, but she said there is also a cost associated with audits.
Fraley and Yost said they discussed the impact of decreasing local government funds, and Yost said they are working on finding ways for small entities to save money on audits.
Fraley said they have been discussing shared services, including sharing financial officers between government entities and school districts.
Fraley said if entities can find a way to share the expertise of individuals, while still maintaining protection and efficiency, it is a benefit.
“It’s a win win,” she said.
Yost and Fraley said they also discussed how they are doing audits and upcoming changes and challenges in the industry.
Fraley said it is helpful to be able to discuss her concerns with Yost when he visits.
“When he hears the same complaint, it allows him to set priorities,” Fraley said.
