The New Richmond High School swim teams got off to promising starts in 2012 and are hoping to parlay that success into the New Year as they set their focus squarely on the sectional tournament coming up during the second weekend in February.

Both squads started the year off with wins at Cincinnati Country Day.

The boys defeated Greenfield McClain, CCD and Summit Country Day 106-87-81-9 to jump start their season.

Cody Biehle (IM) and Derek Gelter (50 free) both won individual events and combined with Henry Bezold and Colt Reese to win the 200-yard freestyle relay.

The boys then defeated Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy and Winton Woods to improve to 5-0 on the season.

The girls’ team was right with the boys, winning their first meet as well against CCD, Greenfield McClain and Summit.

Ann Bishop (100 fly) and Kara Burns (500 free and 100 breast) both took home first-place finishes along with the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Paige Anderson, Alicia Bailey, Ashlee Lewis and Jessica Nazareth.

And keeping up with the boys once again, the girls took first over CHCA and Winton Woods as well.

The boys kept with their winning ways through December, taking down Clark Montessori and Seven Hills while the girls split with the two schools.

With seven meets under their trunks, the Water Lions have proved to be a force to be reckoned with come postseason.

Prior to the Feb. 7 sectional at Mason High School, the Lions will face off with Summit Country Day once again on Jan. 16 and will compete in the Coaches Classic at Milford on Jan. 19 and 20.

Wrapping up their season with Senior Night against Glen Este on Jan. 24 and the Southern Ohio Swim League Meet on Feb. 2, head coach Judy Middeler’s Lions should be ready to swim their way upstate.
