Contractors have begun work on an expansion and remodeling of the Felicity-Franklin Fire Department’s fire station.

The station, located at 718 Market Street in Felicity, will be expanded from 2,500 square feet to about 8,500 square feet. The number of bays for equipment will grow from six to nine, and sleeping quarters for six firefighters will be built.

The sleeping quarters will be used in the future when the department hires full-time employees and is able to staff the station 24-hours a day. The department currently has two paid part-time employees and 28 volunteers.

“We’re doing this without any additional cost to the taxpayers,” Chief Rick Weber said. “This project is being paid for with money we’ve saved over the years.”

Chief Weber says that in addition to plans for adding employees and purchasing equipment, the department, which is a private fire company founded in 1963, is in talks with Franklin Township to merge with the township life squad.

The expansion is expected to be completed by March or April of next year. The contractor is ML Barnard, Inc.
