A Clermont County grand jury has indicted Nathan Parsons, 29, of Williamsburg.

He is charged with killing his step-father in Goshen and then kidnapping a woman at Southern State Community College in Brown County.

“It will all be one case,” Clermont County Prosecutor Don White, said about the separate charges.

Parsons is facing three aggravated murder charges and one charge each of aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, kidnapping and failure to comply with order of signal of police officer.

White said that three separate murder charges were filed to cover the various aspects of the crime. If convicted, he could receive the death penalty.

“We file it three different ways,” White said about the aggravated murder charge. “He can be convicted of all three but only sentenced to one.”

Parsons confessed to Goshen Township police Nov. 16 that he killed his father Richard Parsons, 69, of Goshen in the early morning hours Nov. 15. The initial autopsy revealed the cause of Richard Parsons’ death was strangulation.

“The reason he killed him was in order to steal from him,” White said about Richard Parsons’ death. “There was no drug usage that night, but it is alleged that he had a drug problem, and one of the reasons he was stealing was to buy drugs.”

Goshen Township Police Chief Ray Snyder said Parsons stole several items from his step-father’s home that night including an Xbox, laptop computer, semi-automatic pistol and his pickup truck.

Parsons then drove the pickup truck to Brown County Nov. 16, where he kidnapped Cassie Crawford when she arrived at Southern State Community College in Brown County that morning. Crawford had a previous relationship with Parsons.

Bystanders witnessed the kidnapping and called police. In addition, Crawford was able to use her cell phone to call police from inside Parsons’ vehicle.

Ohio State Highway Patrol responded to the calls, and police were led on a chase by Parsons in both Brown and Adams counties. They eventually stopped Parsons when he drove into a field to avoid tire deflation devices. Crawford was unharmed and was able to speak with police about the incident.

“She told police that he claimed to have murdered his dad,” Chief Snyder said. “They contacted us because the step-father lives here.”

Goshen Township police went to investigate the home of Parsons’ step-father. When there was no answer at the door, they forced entry and found Richard Parsons deceased.

Chief Snyder, along with Sgt. Ed Robinson proceeded to speak with Parsons at Brown County Jail that afternoon.

“We interrogated Mr. Parsons and he confessed to the murder and confessed to stealing several items inside (Richard Parsons) home,” Chief Snyder said.

Originally, Parsons was charged in Brown County with a first degree felony for kidnapping. After the confession, Goshen Township police filed charges for aggravated murder and aggravated robbery in Clermont County.

Parsons was indicted by a Clermont County Grand Jury Nov. 30. He was moved from Brown County Jail to Clermont County Jail Dec. 2 after he was indicted.

Parsons is scheduled for a pre-trial hearing 8 a.m. Dec. 16 at Clermont County Common Pleas Court. He had a bond hearing Dec. 5. Bond was set at $1 million. Parsons remains at Clermont County Jail.
