“Our pitching got us off to a good start this year. They were giving up only one or two runs a game,” said Carter, former Clermont Northeastern High School and college baseball star in his own right.
“Then some of our hitters started to take off and we always had pretty solid defense,” he continued in explaining reason for the success of his squad.
The talented defense consisted of senior catcher David Lenhardt, junior first baseman Tyler Carver, senior second baseman McClain Shepard, sophomore shortstop Austin Lenhardt, sophomore third baseman Ryan Gormley who was chosen by the head coaches of the SBC-N as the Player of the Year, senior left fielder Eric Brown, senior center fielder Nathan Wiesmore, junior right fielder Dalton Wright, and on the mound were Carver, sophomore Tyler Luginbuhl, and sophomore Dakotah Norman. The latter very adequately played first base when Carver was pitching.
Despite having a squad of many multi-talented seniors, Carter is very optimistic about next year’s edition of the Green and White.
“We’ve got an exciting group of young players coming back. We have a talented group of sophomores and a good JV (junior varsity) team moving up. . . We’re losing a nice group of seniors, though,” he said.
The senior members of the Green and White were David Brausch, Brown, Carver, Brandon Griffin, David Lenhardt, Shepard, Charlie Weinberg, and Weismore. Another junior member of the varsity is Jake riley.
He singled out several talented freshman advancing to the varsity next year from this year’s JV squad – infielder Kyle Schmidtgen, Kyle Grant, Austin Sammons, and catcher Dylan Grover.
Gormley was the leading hitter for the ‘Dogs with his .490 average, other good hitting averages from those with a good number of at bats include David Lenhardt .460, Shepard .455, Austin Lenhardt .438, Weismore .421, Wright .364, and Brown .348.
The largest number of base hits belonged to Gormley with 24, David Lenhardt 23, Austin Lenhardt 21, Brown 16, Weismore 16, and Shepard 15.
Scoring the most runs were Austin Lenhardt with 38, David Lenhardt 24, Brown 17, and with 15 apiece were Gormley, Shepard, and Weismore.
Gormley and David Lenhardt easily powered the Green and White with the most runs batted in with 32 and 24, respectively.
David Lenhardt lashed out nine two-baggers and Gormley had eight doubles of his own.
The same Lenhardt spearheaded his squad getting a pair of three-baggers and Dave Brausch, Gormley and Weismore added one apiece.
Muscling out round trippers were David Lenhardt with four and Gormley who contributed another pair.
Working the opposing hurlers for the most bases on balls were David Lenhardt with 15 and 11 each by Austin Lenhardt and Weismore.
Easily the best for the Batavians in the base stealing department was Austin Lenhardt with a total of 21 thefts.
The teammates on this title team were very self sacrificing for each other. Sacrifice hits were successfully performed by Brown twice and once apiece by Brausch, Gormley, Dakotah Norman, and Charles Weinberg.
Gormley launched two sacrifice flies and Brown, Shepard, and Weismore one apiece.
