The Bethel Police Department is getting new equipment thanks to the generosity of the Archie Boyce American Legion Post no. 406.

Post commander Harold “Butch” Sanborn presented a check to Police Chief Mark Planck at the Sept. 13 Bethel village council meeting. The $500 donation will be used to purchase 10 army surplus AR-15 assault rifles. The AR-15 is a common infantry assault rifle with several configurations, including the most recognizable, the M-16.

“We currently carry shotguns and they’re not good for school shootings,” Planck said.
