Dan Shepherd, Glen Este High School senior, has signed a letter-of-intent to further his education and athletic career at Eastern Kentucky University, Richmond.

He plans to major in nursing and to play football.

“I like Eastern Kentucky because it has good academics and it will allow me to shine athletically,” he said.

Shepherd earned nine varsity letters at GE, three apiece in football and basketball, two in track and field, and one in tennis. On the gridiron he was a Fort Ancient Valley Conference Buckeye Division all-star offensive lineman, a Division I all-city and all-district pick, and he competed in the East-West (Greater Cincinnati) all-star game. He earned the Trojan Award and the Iron Man Award in football.

His abundant classroom capabilities earned him membership in the National Honor Society.

Three football games stand out in his thoughts as major moments in a stellar prep sports career.

“Last year against Harrison we won a two overtime game against them . . . this year we played Princeton on TV and I thought that was pretty huge. . . I intercepted a pass this year against Sycamore.”

He expressed gratitude towards major people of importance in his life.

“My dad (former Glen Este High School two-sport standout Rob Shepherd) inspired me to work hard and to be a better person. . . (former GE assistant football) coach (Randy) Hospelhorn has been like a second father to me. . . (GE offensive line) coach (Brian) Spiro taught me a lot of technique. . . (GE head football) coach (Zach) Taylor helped me with getting into college.”
