Mildred “Millie” Vorbeck, 86, of Lafayette, died Tuesday, July 13, 2010 in Lafayette, Indiana. She was born on Aug. 12, 1923, in Philadelphia, PA.

She married Joseph F. Vorbeck on March 5, 1957, in Champaign, IL.

Vorbeck and her husband, Joe, lived in Batavia for 11 years where she is remembered as a volunteer at the Humane Society and as President of the Heatherstone Condominium Association. Her husband was President of Sporty’s Academy and was the initial Director of the University of Cincinnati’s Professional Pilot Training Program at Clermont County Airport. Joe was a member of the National Flight Instructors Hall of Fame. In 1997 the Vorbeck Library was established in her husband’s memory. The library continues to serve UC’s flight students. She had a philanthropic spirit, making donations to numerous organizations and, as a volunteer, teaching craft classes to at-risk children in Lafayette.

Vorbeck was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 31, 1996, her parents Leo and Gertrude Cohen Ostro, and by two sisters and one brother.

She is survived by her children Thea (David) Strand of Lafayette, Gretchen “Cookie” (Doug) Miller of Lexington, Ky. and David (Tammy Turner) Vorbeck of West Lafayette, Ind., and by eight grandchildren, Aaron Strand of Lafayette, Ryan (Becca) Strand of New York City, Justin Vorbeck of LaPorte, Ind., Cassie and Kristen Vorbeck, both of Lafayette, Ind., Callie (Greg) Cady of Florence, Ky., Lindsay Miller of Highland Heights, Ky., and Tyler Miller of Richmond, Ky.

A memorial visitation will be held from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 2, 2010 at Hippensteel Tribute Center, 2529 Schuyler Ave., Lafayette followed by the memorial service at 6 p.m. Hippensteel Funeral Home is serving the family.
