Colonel Cecil Himes, 94, formerly of Batavia, died Saturday, Sept. 19, 2009.

Mr. Himes joined the Ohio National Guard while he was still in high school. He graduated from Batavia High School in 1933 and from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1937. He was assigned to the 11th Cavalry, a horse regiment and in 1940 transferred to the infantry. After a 30-year career in the Army, he retired in September 1967. He then attended Samford University receiving a master’s in business administration. Although he continued to live in Birmingham, Ala., he always considered Batavia his hometown. He founded the Fred C. and Jennie Himes four-year scholarship at Batavia High School.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred C. and Jennie L. Himes and two sons, Robert and Michael Himes.

He is survived by his wife, Irene Miller Himes; one son, James (Joann) Himes; two daughters, Ruthanne Greenwood and Sue Ellen Gibbs; seven grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at Moore’s Family Funeral Home in Batavia.

A military burial will follow at Batavia Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the donor’s charity of choice.
