On March 21, 1859 the first congregation of Moscow Church of Christ was formed and dedicated themselves to each other and to the Lord and became known as the Church of Christ in Moscow.

According to a history of the church, the congregation of 28 agreed to build their church “founded upon the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief cornerstone, to be governed by the law of God and nothing but the law of God.”

The congregation first met in a small building owned by Dr. James Hopple. In 1864 the first building was constructed of brick at a cost of $3,000 and was located at the southeast corner of Fourth and Wells streets.
