The sluggish economic climate is taking its toll on every aspect of the government and the village of Amelia is no exception. Mayor Leroy Ellington announced a freeze on overtime pay and hiring during the council meeting Monday, July 20.

“We will be eliminating any overtime at all unless it is absolutely unavoidable,” said Ellington. “Both the public works department and the police department are operating with less than ideal staffing and I am very proud of the level of services that we are able to provide for our residents. However, as of today, July 20, we are going to temporarily hold off on hiring a public works supervisor.”

The mayor noted that until the village was sure what the tax revenue would be for the remainder of 2009, he felt that implementing the freeze was in the best interest of the village.
