A 1.1 percent village earnings tax will be voted on by the residents of Amelia.

At its regular meeting Sept. 4, Amelia’s six-member village council, based on the recommendation of mayor Leroy Ellington, passed a resolution to have the earned income tax be placed on a February 2009 special election ballot.

During the meeting, which was attended by approximately 50 people, Ellington said that having the 4,000 residents of the village approve or reject the measure, instead of council voting to impose the measure (which they could have done), will hopefully eliminate the controversy and the personal attacks that have been surrounding the issue since its inception.
