Voters in Batavia Local School District will decide next Tuesday, Aug. 5, on whether to approve a total of 10.3 mills in new school taxes.

That total includes a 9.8 bond issue, which would fund construction of a new middle school and a new elementary school, repair and expand the high school, and provide other improvements. In addition, a 0.5 mill tax levy, required by the state, would be for maintenance.

If approved by the voters, the project would put all three of the district’s schools on a single site near the eastern edge of the district.

The existing elementary school and the classrooms of the middle school in Batavia Village would be closed.

Total cost of the package would be $60,000,000, with the Ohio School Facilities Commission providing $26,149,140 of that amount for school construction and repairs. However, the state will not help pay for 10 items included in the school’s plan which would cost more than $12 million.
