As road conditions worsen due to the winter weather and traffic receives a boost from Christmas shopping and seasonal travel, Lt. Randy McElfresh of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said that motorists are encouraged to slow down and consider their surroundings when driving.

According to Lt. McElfresh, the potential for accidents increases during this time of year, but some caution employed while driving would help to reduce, rather than increase, winter travel accidents this year.

“Weather kind of dictates things now,” said Lt. McElfresh. “People should carry a cell phone in the car, have road flares, help or call police signs, a first-aid kit, flashlight, blanket and maybe a small shovel. People should carry a little food and water and keep a tow strap and chain in the car.”

Additionally, the potential for accidents caused by inebriated drivers rises as office and personal parties creates more environments for drinking.
