Milford boys soccer among ten best in Ohio; Lion lads going for another SBC soccer crown

The undefeated Milford varsity boys soccer team has earned a top 10 in the state ranking voted by Ohio’s high school varsity boys soccer coaches.

New Richmond’s varsity boys soccer team is in pursuit of yet another Southern Buckeye Conference American Division (SBC-A) crown.

The Lions are currently 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the SBC-A.

“We have a whole lot more balanced offense this year,” head coach Bill Harris said. “We have 18 guys who can all play. They’re very cohesive and very coachable and they’re very quick.”

Junior center midfielder Matt Kilgore is the scoring leader with six goals. Senior right halfback Joel Wickham and senior center midfielder Greg Mott have netted three goals each. Mott leads the team in assists with five and junior striker Doug Staton has three.

The defensive stalwarts have been senior stopper Brad Burton, junior sweeper Zac Branam, and senior fullbacks Justin Behymer and Ed Lamb. Harris also singled out the good play of fullbacks Nathan Warden, a junior, and Matt Lancaster, a sophomore.

“We’re focusing to try to play error-free soccer,” Harris said.

He pointed out his charges have some big obstacles ahead in SBC-A competition in Bethel-Tate and Western Brown, both of whom the Lions have defeated on the road. “They’re our big rivals. Our goal is to repeat as champion, but we’ll have a battle with both of them.”
