Since 1983, the American Psychiatric Association has sponsored Mental Illness Awareness Week, which is designed to draw attention to mental disorders as well as educate the nation about symptoms and treatments for mental disorders.

The 2005 Mental Illness Awareness Week runs from Oct. 3 through Oct. 9 and features a National Depression Screening Day on Thursday, Oct. 6.
